The cold didn't stop us: a fall ride in Canada
The alarm goes off and it's still dark outside. Through the window, the trees glow red, orange and gold, and the temperature shows a number that makes you want to stay indoors. It's fall in Quebec.
But there's a message from the group chat on your phone: "Are we riding or what?". On the other end are the usual crew, the same friends you've shared miles and climbs with.
And in the closet is the kit that makes the answer easy. The answer is yes.
Every year it's the same story. Fall arrives, temperatures drop and many cyclists hang up their bikes until spring. It's not a lack of motivation: riding in the cold without the right clothing simply stops being fun.
Your hands go numb, the wind creeps in through your collar and the sweat from the climb turns to ice on the descent. With the wrong clothing, the cold wins.
With the right clothing, fall becomes one of the best seasons to ride: quieter roads, landscapes you won't see any other time of year, and months on the bike you used to write off.
The meeting point is the usual one. They arrive one by one, breath clouding the air, smiling like people who know they made the right call. They roll out to Rivière Saint-Charles.
Riding in layers: how we dress for fall

A little piece of Colombia in Canada
After the miles, the ride ends where the best rides always end: at a café.
And not just any coffee. Colombian coffee, served thousands of miles from home. Hands wrapped around the mug, steam rising, cheeks still red from the cold.
In that moment, everything clicks. The clothes they're wearing were born in Medellín. The coffee they're drinking comes from our mountains. Without being in Colombia, that morning held two little pieces of it: one in the cup and one on their skin.
More months on the bike
